The MMAR allows access to medical cannabis to people who are suffering from debilitating illnesses. It is not legal to grow or possess marijuana except with legal permission by Health Canada . The regulations outline two categories for people who can apply to possess medical cannabis for there conditions.

Category 1 : This category is comprised of any symptoms treated within the context of providing compassionate end-of-life care; or the symptoms associated with the specified medical conditions listed in the schedule to the Regulations, specifically:

1. Severe pain, cachexia, anorexia, weight loss, and/or severe nausea from HIV/AIDS infection ;

2. Severe pain and/or persistent muscle spasms from multiple sclerosis ;

3. Severe pain and/or persistent muscle spasms from a spinal cord injury ;

4. Severe pain and/or persistent muscle spasms from spinal cord disease ;

5. Severe pain from severe forms of arthritis ;

6. Seizures from epilepsy.

Category 2 : This category is for people who suffer debilitating symptoms associated with a serious medical condition other then those described in Category 1, and if a specialist confirms the diagnosis and that conventional treatments have failed or been judged inappropriate to relieve symptoms of the medical condition.

If your medical practitioner is not already a specialist, an assessment of your case by a specialist is required.

Health Canada exemption forms are available at the Green Cross and help is offered to members and the public who need assistance is properly filling out forms. The MMAR offers a personal production license to exempted card holders to help cut costs of there medical cannabis . It is important to note that the "Marihuana Medical Access Regulations" deal exclusively with the medical use of cannabis. As a licensed patient, you have three legal choices to obtain your medical cannabis:

1. Purchase Medical Cannabis from Health Canada

2. Grow Medical Marijuana at Home

3. Assign a Designated Grower to Grow for You

You can apply for a license to have designated person produce cannabis on your behalf in a secure location. You just have to ask.
